Tyrmfar – Renewal Through Purification (album)

Release date: 22nd June 2019 || Genre: Black/death metal || Label: MTAF Records

By mixing some fairly stock (but high quality) black metal, with chunky Swedeath and gothic doom, Tyrmfar have landed a very enjoyable sound. Where others may have opted for a “quiet/loud” approach in order to emphasise the travel of songs, they have gone with “blast/groove”. It’s not a wholly common combination, but it is surely a safe bet in extreme metal. There is definitely a home for this across European festival stages. That said, much of the more traditionally blackened music herein is grafted with a monumental sense of bleakness and heartache; a strangely uplifting atmosphere. As a release which feels a little accessible in a vein born to melt faces on contact, this is an instantly enjoyable album at face value. If that sounds good and bad in one breath, we’re on the same page. However, on second spin, it already feels like something which could fester its miserable way into the psyche. Far from breeding contempt, familiarity, in this case, is fertile ground to cultivate a stronger relationship between long-player and listener. I think I’ll go in again…
