The legendary Dragon Fire scours through the Earth once more, unearthing the latest campfire tales.
Edge Of Sanity – Jesus Cries (remastered)
There’s something magical about the way the first riff kicks off in this song. The rest of the track is full of hooks, right, but the opening really grabs you. This band, who were originally fronted by legendary producer, Dan Swanö, are re-issuing a load of their old releases, including 1993’s The Spectral Sorrows, which spawned this track.
From the press release: “Following the “First Chapter” of re-issues from June/August, which saw Century Media Records re-issue Edge Of Sanity’s Purgatory Afterglow, Until Eternity Ends – EP and Nothing But Death Remains as well as InsideOutMusic re-issue Nightingale’s Nightfall Overture and I titles, the upcoming “Second Chapter” will cover the all-remastered releases and formats in December 2024 and February 2025“

Opensight – The Great Silence (live)
Cunning kippers will recognise the name Opensight from this year’s Hordes X fest in Dundee. If you were there, you’ll know this band is a lot of fun on stage, and truly bring something unique to proceedings, with their b-movie prog cinemetal. Captured live at The Forge in Camden, The Great Silence comes from their forthcoming live album The Grindhouse Tapes (Forged in London).
Opensight say: “Our bassist took the reins of the production for these live tracks and they ended up sounding way better than what we expected, so we decided to release a live album for this show while we prepare our next studio full length”
Löanshark – Electric Shoking Waves
Recently signed up with ROAR (part of Reigning Phoenix Music), Löanshark have nailed a lesser tapped end of the 80s sound. Kind of early Megadeth meets Raven in places. Electric Shoking Waves is the first taste of their upcoming album, No Sins To Confess, coming February 14th through their new label.
“It’s a great honor to join ROAR to introduce our first album and become part of this family that includes many of the best and most legendary artists of the genre!” The band comments on their label signing. “We want to rise to the occasion, the heavy metal vice is burning in our veins and we can’t wait to spread the fire around the world!“

Lord Agheros – Sorrow’s Shroud
Heading into winter, weather can be beautifully bleak. So, there’s no surprise that extreme music fans can find stark, frostbitten black metal somehow more moving at this time of year. Such is the way with this icy anthem. Sorrow’s Shroud features on Lord Agheros‘ full-length, Anhedonia, out January 3rd My Kingdom Music.
From the press release: “Once again Gerassimos Evangelou, only mind behind this project experiencing the atmospheric and avantgardish side of black metal during the last 20 years and more, presents with Anhedonia an album where the cinematic essence of Ulver is side by side with the Avantgardism of Ihsahn, where the strength of Wolves In The Throne Room contrasts with the mediterranean touch of Moonspell and the dramatic elements of Empyrium.“

Wardruna – Birna
One might have suspected dark folk would’ve started to slide out of favour with the gods of metal. Yet, here we are, with troupes of riff-worshippers still hooked on new output from the genre. Wardruna, obviously, are one of the biggest original names. They continue at the top of their game with Birna (the she-bear). This is the title track for their next album, coming January 24th via Sony Music/By Norse Music.
Einar Selvik says “The bear doesn’t need my help or any human traditional ornamentation to be its own powerful self. It is quite the opposite if one looks to past bear-traditions worth remembering. We learn, we dream of borrowing its traits and abilities. We fear, revere, and try to walk alongside but on separate paths. Respectfully, claim space and give space. However inconvenient it may be, further taming of the wild can never be the fruitful way forward. For me, it profoundly felt like the right time to give voice to the Birna, mother and shepherd of the vanishing woods,”

Post Death Soundtrack – Lowdown Animal
It seems that lately there has been a resurgence of grunge influence in melodic metal. Mostly in the doom/desert leaning spheres. We’re talking the good stuff, too; Soundgarden, Alice In Chains. Riffy things. Post Death Soundtrack are delivering up the 90s influenced goods in spades with Lowdown Animal. It comes from their fourth full-length, Veil Lifter, which came out earlier this year. Wish we’d caught onto it sooner
“Veil Lifter is the album I’ve always wanted to make,” explains Stephen Moore, PDS’s vocalist and guitarist. “It’s a deep dive into the shadows of isolation, depression, and resilience. Written during periods of intense personal turmoil, this album serves both as a protective chant and a bold confrontation of inner demons.“
