The legendary Dragon Fire scours through the Earth once more, unearthing the latest campfire tales.
Vitriol – Shame and its Afterbirth
Weird AND brutal? That’s right in our wheelhouse! Shame and its Afterbirth is fully flowing down the demented dirt track when it comes to combined strange sounds with brutal ones, kicking in like a murderer’s music box. It comes from Vitriol‘s second album, Suffer & Become, out January 26th on Century Media.
Guitarist and vocalist Kyle Rasmussen comments, “‘Shame’ begins the story of ‘Suffer & Become’ with a celebration of our nature. It speaks to how modernity estranges one from the voiceless voice within them, and on the consequences of ignoring the call of their instincts. It also happens to be my favorite song (musically) that I’ve ever written. I set out to carve deep valleys and build tall mountains when writing this album, and I believe this song to be the best example of that achievement.“

Lilla Veneda – Colossi
Keeping the unsettlingly horror-tinged vibes rolling, is Lilla Veneda‘s new track, Colossi. While a bit more traditional, this slow stomping black metal number is none the less eerie. There’s a bit of a Hammer tone haunting the background, which keeps things nice and atmospheric. This can be found on their third LP, Primordial Movements, due for self-release on February 29th.
Discussing their moniker, founder, Virian, says “We were looking for the name that will be unique but also adequate the musical atmosphere. Lilla Weneda is dark tragedy immersed in the pagan period of time (pre-Polish). It reminds the best tragedies written by William Shakespeare but with the Slavic background.“

Fall Of Leviathan – Spermwhale
No more jolly, but, perhaps a little less oppressively dark, our next choice cut comes from Fall Of Leviathan. Spermwhale is the lead track from their upcoming debut album, In Waves, due out via Vitruve Records on March 01st. This track eases you in, nice and gentle, before smashing in with a tidal wave of bittersweet post-metal heft.
As the press release says “Inspired by nautical themes and the abyssal, the Swiss collective plays a mixture of post-rock and post-metal elements in the vein of Mogwai and Neurosis and throughout six tracks In Waves showcases the band’s penchant for layering dark, heavy tones with graceful and ethereal melodies, resulting in an unpredictable journey that’s equal parts gloomy and beautiful emotive.“

Spritual Deception – Atavic Future
Next, it’s back to the beastly stuff, with a slab of death metal from Spiritual Deception. With technical parts and symphonic moments, Atavic Future is an interesting spin, and hints that new album, Semitae Mentis, should be a worthy listen. It’s out Feb 09th physically on Amputated Vein with Earache handling digital distribution.
From the bio: “The band has a deep connection with philosophy and owes its name to a theory from the Danish philosopher Søren Aabye Kierkegaard, which struck the composers’ minds: different human beings in the act of analyzing a particular circumstance, approach (inevitably) the situation with different points of view. Extending that fact to the ethics field hence that nothing can be defined as objective good or bad, true or false, as the judgment is deeply rooted in everyone’s own perspective. As a result, there is no objective truth, your soul is constantly deceived.”

Disconnected Souls – Delirium
Next up, Disconnected Souls are bleeding electronic music into some fairly heavy metalcore with their new track, Delirium. The experimental elements work really well here, complementing the heaviness, rather than jumbling things up like some bands do. The song is from their album Fragments of Consciousness, set to be released on January 19th.
Felix Luca King (clean vox, synths, programming) comments: “Working on ‘Delirium’ was a blast – we had a looser pitch here than for our previous video, ‘Dissonant Whispers’, allowing lot of leeway to work with our videographer on-location to get some great shots. It was also a nice opportunity to invite some extras on set – music is often about collaboration, of all kinds!“

The Risen Dread – Betrayal
Closing out this round up is the brand new track, Betrayal, from Dubliners, The Risen Dread. This is just a nice slice of dirty underground metal. No messing. Biting vocals sit atop shuddering guitars and drums, all set for stirring up filthy pits. It sounds like there’s a fresh album or EP in the works, but for now this will have to suffice.
Guitarist William Ribeiro comments on the single: “Betrayal, even though I had some of those riffs for a while, is the first song we wrote after the drummer left. We wanted to do the opposite of what we did for our last album, we wanted this track to be straight to the point and not only fast, we wanted it to be aggressive and heavy, with headbanging riffs as well as moshpit parts. I think Betrayal summarizes the dread that rises again from within each band member after this 2023 year. Nothing better than talking about a woman locked up by her mother. Can you imagine how she felt?”
