The legendary Dragon Fire scours through the Earth once more, unearthing the latest campfire tales.
Burial Path – The Luminary
Blackened deathcore. Yup, that’s a thing. And judging by this little number from Burial Path, it’s a bit of a beast. This Texas/Nebraska four piece are pretty new, but they have already developed some heft, and are savvy enough to add a dash of tasty melody. They only have this and one other track up so far, (The Seeker), but it’s looking highly promising!
“The Luminary is an exploration and interpretation of the unconscious mind’s processing of overwhelming fears in a dream state. Lyrically the song visits what it means to understand and make peace with what we cannot control. Each instrument was written in a way that would add a feeling of tension and dread. The post-production adds further to that with droning tones and percussive elements that can be jarring/unsettling to the mind.” – Aïcha Finnleikr (vocals)

Penny Coffin – Apocryphal Obstruction
Scottish extreme metallers, Penny Coffin know how to drop some dirty riffage. We clocked their new video for Apocryphal Obstruction doing the rounds on social media, and had to give it a mention. The track itself is the partner to March To The Grave, released as a double single in October. The genre busting death metal offering is all DIY, too, with members of the band handling all mixing and mastering duties. An excellent effort all round.
State Penny Coffin “Basically we thought it had been a while since the last release and had the itch to make some music. March To The Grave we’ve been playing live for a bit. It’s maybe a little bit of a departure in that it’s more hook based and mid paced. Lyrical wise its about the IDF desecrating Palestinian graves. Thought ideally we should pair it with something a little more full blooded and fast so picked Apocryphal Obstruction from the collection of demos we have. Plan is for another couple of songs out in the next couple of months.“

Maceration – Serpent Devourment
Denmark has a pretty blazing scene when it comes to gritty metal and hardcore. Brewing away in the West of the country, Maceration are one of its longest running and most influential death metal contributors. Seriously, check out the founding members’ other activities. They are pretty impressive. Serpent Devourment is a hefty slab of dirty DM, and the title track of their upcoming album. It drops in January on Emanzipation Productions.
Maceration had this to say “The upcoming album contains 10 brand new tracks Like always we focus on brutality, speed and heaviness. We always try to combine this with melody and catchy riffs and choruses. This time maybe the songs are more varied and even “heavier” than earlier material. Guess we have felt more freedom this time in writing songs since its not a comeback album where you tend to look back to the debut.”

Múr – Frelsari
We’ve been keeping an eye on these Iclandic prog dealers for a while now. Well, as much as possible with such a new band. As you can tell from Frelsari, though, they ain’t green. There’s some proper developed talent in there (and some keytar). It’s a thumping beast of a track compared to its sprawling, haunted predecessor, Heimsslit. With any luck, the self-titled full-length will privide a similar breadth of character throughout. It lands November 22nd via Century Media.
Describing their music as “a wall of sound and emotion,” Múr is quick to point out that their sound is up for interpretation. “I’m not sure whether it’s our place to fully define it,” cautions frontman Kári Haraldsson “as people seem to take vastly different things away from experiencing it, depending on who they are and what they like in music.” While their complex passages will undoubtedly elicit different perspectives as it borrows from many genres and elements, the emotional component to their music is more direct, with lyrics that center on the human experience. “Most of the lyrics revolve around facing yourself, breaking the shackles of inner turmoil and finding strength in letting go,” he adds.

Splintered Halo – Ju-on
Slow Dragon Music has been a long time appreciator of Glaswegian theatrical horror band, Splintered Halo. They tend to put their all into creating musical character, and Ju-On is no different. It comes from their second album, Nightmares, Legends and Gore, which we previously covered in Feeding Frenzy, saying “If you dig the likes of Sweeny Todd and Repo, this should hit you.” While recorded works won’t prepare you for the live experience, it’s well worth digging into their audio grimoires.
The band comment “Ju-On (The Grudge) is about the Japanese horror movie of the same name; a tale of the vengeful spirit of a woman, Kayako, murdered by her husband and forced to watch him kill their young son. The music has a distinctly Japanese theme to it, and is both suitably creepy, yet also rage fuelled, befitting of the character herself. The accompanying music video has plenty of nods to the movie franchise, with a dark, dingy, Japanese vibe running throughout.“

Overt Enemy – Eradication
The full album might be miles off yet, with a release date set nearly a year away, but this sneak peak from Texan heavies, Overt Enemy is already worth a mention. Part gritty hardcore, part death-thrash, Eradication is one intense beast, so we’re really hoping the rest of Insurrection follows suit. A right neckwrecker, that’s for sure.
“‘Eradication’ is one part of a 3-song story about an alien invasion. It starts with the perspective of the invaders. Musically it’s one of our more technical songs and so much fun to play on guitar. It’s very theatrical, and Laura plays ‘the alien queen.’ We have way too much fun around here,” the band shared.
