SDM: Moments Of The Months 2024
Albums of the year? Not quite… At Slow Dragon Music, it’s Moments Of The Months!
We’re taking a look back over the happenings of 2024, and recapping on those which have stuck in our mind. It’s been a wild ride. Let’s take time to reflect.

JANUARY
Balkan Metal Meet – Albania
Our festival season technically started super early this year. We fired over to Tirana, the capital of Albania, to check out Balkan Metal Meet. It’s always interesting to experience something new and see how others get things done. While small, headliners like Frantic Amber and Godiva gave this the fest feel. Check out our wrap article of the event here.

FEBRUARY
M2TM/Mosh Monthly
Collaboration is an ideal at SDMHQ, so doubling down on it was certain to be a highlight for us. Our first Dundee round of Bloodstock’s Metal 2 The Masses this year was also the beginning of Mosh Monthly. The regular riff sessions are a team effort between Slow Dragon Music and Kevvymetal Promotions. Catch our “end of year one” chat here.

MARCH
Inferno
Set in Oslo, Norway, Inferno Metal Fest and Music Conference has become somewhat of a yearly pilgrimage for SDM. The audience isn’t too huge, but there are some massive extreme metal bands on the bill every year. For the industry minded, the attached conference is a goldmine, and surely among the best in the genre. Simply great every time. Read our 2024 wrap here.

APRIL
Wardruna – Hertan
Few bands can sooth the beast like Wardruna. Having seen them at last year’s Wacken Open Air, we have had a fairly recent experience from the group. It has been a while, however, since their last album, Kvitravn, so when the first whiff of new material arrived in the form of Hertan, you can be damn sure it caught our attention. The next full-length installment, Birna, arrives on January 24th. Find out more here.

MAY
Metal 2 The Masses: Scotland – Grand Final
Concluding the not inconsiderable task of trawling around Scotland to present some of the best new bands in the country always feels like an accomplishment. Every year, we are proud to work with every band who takes part. The winners always earn their spot at Bloodstock, and Hammer were certainly no exception in 2024. They really nailed it…

JUNE
Balkan Metal Meet – Bulgaria
After our January experience with Balkan Metal Meet, we decided to go for round two in Sofia, Bulgaria. This was kind of downscale in comparison, but the venue (Old Skulls) was a lot more unique and welcoming. It left us feeling like we were part of the family, and the hospitality was above and beyond. Find out more in our wrap article here.

JULY
Orange Goblin – Science, Not Fiction
You just can’t beat a slithering slab of hard-grooving metal to keep the energy up when you have a hefty gig schedule. Right in the middle of festival season, Orange Goblin delivered the goods this year, with their 10th album, Science Not Fiction. It grabbed us by the short and curlies – Possibly their best full-length platter to date… Find out more on the Peaceville Records website here.

AUGUST
Bloodstock Open Air
Naturally, being tied in via M2TM, the UK’s biggest independent metal fest is going to feature here. Connections aside, it really is a great event. Proper camping without a tentopolis. Everything laid out with convenience in mind. But most of all, it is top of the league for platforming the underground alongside big hitters in heavy music. Find out more on their website here.

SEPTEMBER
Hordes X
Hordes x – Our fulcrum event. The oldest metal fest in Scotland. This year we pushed the boat right out, and it was certainly somewhat of a learning experience. However, it ran smoother than ever, even with the extra days and twice as many bands. We are hoping to bring it back next year, but it may well see some major changes…

OCTOBER
Behemoth – XXX Years Ov Blasphemy
Having witnessed this band multiple times, spread over a few countries, we feel confident in stating that Behemoth are one of the top shows in extreme metal. Period. A live release, therefore, makes perfect sense. OK, it was recorded originally as a streaming event, but covering three decades of doing what they do, XXX Years Ov Blasphemy is definitely worth checking out. Get more info in the Nuclear Blast website here.

NOVEMBER
Body Count – Merciless
It might be from growing up in the 90s, but a new Body Count album is always gonna get some love over here. Sure, Merciless doesn’t hold the same character as their self-titled debut. They’ve gone far more metal for starters. But it’s still got character, and the inimitable one of an original legend in one genre carving a comparable status in another. The whole record is playing above if you want to test that theory. On with the Body Count!

DECEMBER
Dundee Metal Fest Winter Edition
This whole year, the metal scene in Dundee seems to have kicked things up a notch. There have been more gigs through SDM and others, and fresh talent springing into action. It has felt like a growing community, and wrapping up the year with Dundee Metal Fest‘s Winter edition was perfect. Cadaver Concerts did a sterling job, yet again, of heralding the underground in all its forms. Keep an eye on https://www.facebook.com/share/Px6SnbPFKwrrckBn/ for more.
